Pain in the spine, radiating to the back of the head, ribs or legs, is explained by pinching of the nerve roots of the spinal discs.
In medicine, such a manifestation has an official name: osteochondrosis, which is divided into sections depending on the location, which entails distinctive symptoms and treatments.
Today, many non-traditional remedies are used to treat degenerative processes of the spine, known decades ago.At that time, medicine was not yet sufficiently developed and for some people it was completely inaccessible.
Treatment of osteochondrosis with folk remedies was practiced by our great-grandfathers, so we can safely say that folk recipes have stood the test of time, curing many people from the disease.
Concept and features
Osteochondrosis is a degenerative lesion of the articular cartilage and adjacent bone tissue.
In medicine, this term refers to the characteristic depletion and degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs.
Depending on the advanced stage of the disease, a person may suffer from both pain caused by crushing of the nerve roots and protrusion of the nucleus pulposus with rupture of the fibrous ring, called intervertebral hernia.
The presented disease has become somewhat “rejuvenated”.If 10-20 years ago most patients were elderly people or citizens over the age of 50, and the causes of osteochondrosis were due to age-related wear of the intervertebral disc and loss of previous elasticity, today the disease is diagnosed in young people due to their sedentary lifestyle.
Osteochondrosis can rightly be called the plague of our time, since office work activities and long periods spent at the computer lead to “stagnation” of the entire musculoskeletal system.
If you do not pay attention to back pain in time, which often occurs in the morning, you risk bringing the situation to the occurrence of such unpleasant phenomena as diseases of the spine, the entire musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.Advanced cases lead to paralysis of the limbs and partial or complete immobility of a person.
Types of diseases depending on location
The human spinal column is made up of vertebrae, each of which belongs to a specific section.Here we highlight:
- cervical spine – 7 vertebrae;
- thoracic region - 12 vertebrae;
- lumbar region – 5 vertebrae;
- sacrum – 5 vertebrae;
- coccygeal region - 3-5 vertebrae.
In turn, osteochondrosis can be classified according to the localization of its onset, where the following are distinguished:

- Cervical spine: an attack of dystrophic changes begins after a long static position.The pain gets worse every time you move your head or sneeze.Signs of manifestation include pain in the back of the head, shoulders, migraine, increased blood pressure and dizziness.
- Thoracic region: Damage in this area rarely occurs, since the thoracic vertebrae practically do not tolerate pressure.Pain is often perceived as a disease of the heart and other internal organs.Characterized by shooting pain in the ribs and abdomen, which disappears when changing position.
- Lumbar: Excruciating pain, leading a person to characteristic immobility, is explained by osteochondrosis in the lumbar region.Premature treatment leads to numbness and paralysis of the legs, dysfunction of the genitourinary system, and urinary incontinence is often diagnosed.
Exacerbation of osteochondrosis of any part can be caused by physical activity, an inflammatory process in the human body or hypothermia.Recovery can take several weeks to a year.
Traditional medicine methods for the treatment of diseases
Treatment of osteochondrosis with folk remedies at home plays an important role.
So, for example, pain that can appear suddenly can be easily eliminated with various effective methods of traditional medicine.
It should also be noted that osteochondrosis is an inflammatory process of the nerve roots and muscles of the spinal cord located near the affected area.
Pinching leads to poor circulation, which means a lack of nutrients.The main task of any traditional medicine method is to relieve pain and inflammation, thereby restoring blood circulation.
In addition to the described task in the treatment of traditional medicine, the following positive aspects can be highlighted:
- The composition of any product contains only natural ingredients that do not entail side effects.
- Some medicinal herbs have a more beneficial effect than a drug containing many chemicals.
- Traditional medicine is available to any citizen thanks to the low cost of medicines.
If we talk about the negative aspects of traditional medicine, then it is necessary to note the slowness of the patients themselves, who began to self-medicate without undergoing a complete and thorough diagnosis to identify the causes of back pain.
As a precaution, you should consult your doctor about using your chosen method as treatment.
Treatment of the cervical spine

Experts recommend that office workers and drivers regularly do exercises to improve blood circulation and prevent osteochondrosis.
Short turns of the head to the sides, tilting the head forward and backward, are suitable here.All movements are performed smoothly.
To increase efficiency, create a kind of load on the neck muscles: tilt your head to the side and create an obstacle to movement with your hand.
Circular movements and sudden tilting of the head backwards with cervical osteochondrosis are strictly prohibited.This can lead to cervical disc injury and prolapse.
With cervical osteochondrosis, in addition to exercises, it is recommended to do night compresses, which perfectly eliminate pain and inflammation.
Here you can use the recipes:
- Potato and honey compress.To prepare the medicinal composition, boil the potatoes in their skins.The hot tubers are kneaded and slightly melted honey is added in a 1:1 ratio.The composition is carefully mixed and a flat cake is made from it.It is applied to the painful area, covered with polyethylene and wrapped overnight in a woolen scarf.
- Horseradish leaf compress.Scald a horseradish leaf with boiling water and apply it to the damaged cervical vertebra.Cover the sheet with polyethylene and a woolen scarf.Leave overnight.The method cannot be used if you feel a burning sensation on the skin.
- To eliminate the inflammatory process, use a herbal tincture.Dried and pre-chopped hops, chamomile and oregano are mixed in equal quantities.A spoonful of the mixture is poured into a glass of boiling water, poured into a dark vessel and left for three days.After the time, the infusion is taken one tablespoon twice a day.
All these methods are also suitable for the treatment of osteochondrosis of other parts.Any of the methods should be used only after consulting a doctor.
Treatment of the lumbar region

Treatment of lumbar osteochondrosis at home should be carried out immediately after waking up.
Lying in bed, you need to do several exercises.Immediately after waking up, lie on your back and stretch out, stretching your legs and toes.
Fix yourself in this position for a minute.Here are some exercises you can do:
- First, bend your leg at the knee and pull it towards your chest.Perform several repetitions with one leg, then switch and repeat the exercise.
- Raise your leg at a right angle several times.Switch legs and perform the same number of repetitions.
- Bend both knees and lift your pelvis for a few seconds.
At night, you can use a compress or ointment to treat lumbar osteochondrosis at home.To prepare the compress we take 700 grams of butter and two glasses of birch buds.
Mix the ingredients and rub overnight.Wrap with cling film and a wool scarf.Leave overnight.
To prepare the ointment, mix 1 tablespoon of garlic chopped through a meat grinder with two tablespoons of lard.The ointment is rubbed into the lower back.
To treat osteochondrosis of the lumbar region, a decoction of cranberries is used.Pour a spoonful of chopped cranberry leaves into a glass of boiling water and bring the mixture to a boil in an enameled pan over low heat.
After boiling for 15 minutes, the broth is filtered and used for oral administration.The filtered broth is drunk two tablespoons three times a day.
If the thoracic region is affected
Treatment of osteochondrosis of the thoracic region is based on gymnastic exercises, medicinal baths and the use of ointments prepared independently at home.You can use the following methods:
- For a therapeutic bath, add 400 grams of celandine or dandelion flowers to 5 liters of boiling water.Cover the container with a blanket for two hours.Pour the composition into the prepared bath at a temperature of 38-39 degrees Celsius.A bathing session lasts only 15 minutes.The course of treatment lasts 15-20 days.
- To prepare the ointment, mix the chopped ficus leaves and butter in equal quantities.The composition is kept in a hot oven for two hours.The strained and cooled mixture is rubbed into the affected area overnight.
- For rubbing, you can prepare a composition of 100 grams of crushed clove petals and 200 grams of olive oil.The components are kept for half an hour in a water bath.The filtered and cooled mixture is applied to the thoracic spine and rubbed thoroughly.

As gymnastics, you can use exercises with deviations.To bend, you should sit in a chair and, holding your palms behind your head, bend backwards as you exhale.Do several repetitions.
The same exercise is performed on all fours.As you exhale, bend your back and hold it in this position for several seconds.
The fight against osteochondrosis can last a long time, and the patient is required not only to comply with all the doctor's instructions, but also to eliminate all factors provoking an exacerbation.
The pathology can be treated not only with drugs, but also with folk remedies.To do this, the most effective methods and recipes are selected that are safe and do not cause an allergic reaction.
With timely treatment, the consequences and complications of osteochondrosis are not terrible for a person.But before using any method, you should undergo a complete and thorough diagnosis and also consult a doctor.
